aurangabad: narmada bachao andolan (nba) leader medha patkar has demanded immediate steps to revive the sick paithan industrial estate, which was established to provide jobs to 70,000 families affected by the jaykawadi dam. speaking at a women's rally in paithan town in the district recently, patkar charged that the industrial estate is facing a crisis due to the apathy of the state government, thereby depriving the projectaffected persons (paps) from 108 villages of their livelihood.
the nba leader charged that the government had done nothing for the growth of the industrial estate, which was naturally equipped with water and energy facilities. the industrial estate, established in 1976, initially had 150 small and nearly 24 medium industrial units. however, more than 100 units have been closed, she lamented. patkar has also urged local activists to conduct a survey of the 108 villages in shevgaon, nevase, gangapur and paithan talukas, which were submerged in the jaykawadi irrigation project, and take up the issues of the paps.
